The Norwegian Sea Bass project
Det Norske Havabborprosjektet
Presents:
Dr Mike Pawson, from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), UK, will be holding a lecture on European sea bass. European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax or havabbor på Norsk, have become more frequent in Southern Norway and along the west coast during the last 15 years. Commercial and recreational fishing interests for this species in Norway have grown rapidly. Because the Norwegian authorities presently consider sea bass a "foreign" species that only occasionally "visits" the Norwegian coast, there is very little knowledge about the species in Norway and no regulations managing its fishery. There are present indications that this species has already established breeding populations in Norwegian coastal waters. The "Norwegian" sea bass maybe linked to the European stock, and thus should be included in the larger European management and conservation perspective on this important commercial and recreational fish. This is perhaps the first lecture ever held in Norway pertaining to European Sea bass, and thus represents an exciting new topic for Scandinavia. Dr. Pawson is one of the world's leading experts on this subject and is co-author of the book " Sea Bass - Biology, exploitation and conservation". This lecture is part of a workshop with the Norwegian Sea Bass project, whom CEFAS is an active partner.
The lecture will be in room 3508, Kristine Bonneveis hus (Biologisk inst.).
